Gower support the Guernsey Women’s Cricket team
As sponsor's of the Guernsey Women & Girls Cricket Programme, the Gower team were out in force on Saturday to support the Guernsey Women in their Inter Insular matches against Jersey. Basking in glorious sunshine at a picturesque KGV playing fields, Guernsey were always the underdogs against a very strong Jersey side. They performed well against the higher ranked team, with objectives set to make progress, achieve targets and little wins along the way. In the first two games standout performances for Guernsey came from Emily Merrien with bowling figures of 3 wickets for 24 runs, while with the bat Krista De la Mare hit a quickfire 23 runs off 27 balls. In match two Rosie Davis held things together with a solid 22 off 45 balls earning her the player of the match award.
Congratulations to Jersey for retaining the Inter Insular Cup with a 3-0 clean sweep and to Guernsey for making progress with some good individual performances. Gower Associate Director Paul McCormick said, “Whilst it’s never good to lose to the old enemy across the water, the Guernsey team showed some positive improvement in the first two games and it needs to be remembered that this is year one of a five-year plan in their development, and we’re looking forward to following their progress”.
We wish the Guernsey Women well for the remainder of this season. In August they head to Europe for four International T20 matches against Austria, and it is hoped by the end of this season they will have their first International Cricket Council (ICC) world ranking.
